Who is the course for?

  • Free to all NHS staff.
  • You must provide a valid certificate (within the last two years) of attendance for epilepsy awareness training to JEC standards with them before you can participate on the course.
  • Epilepsy Awareness/Rescue medication training is valid for 2 years and must be updated every 2 years (JEC/January 2012)

The administration of buccal midazolam

  • What is midazolam? Its uses for epilepsy and other conditions
  • Indications for the use of midazolam
  • Different routes of delivery and appropriate doses when given buccally
  • The benefits of buccal midazolam
  • Practical demonstration using DVD (Special products – Administration guide for Epistatus) and or/volunteer
  • Possible difficulties in administration (e.g. excessive salivation, injury to mouth etc)
  • Consequences of too much midazolam being given, and how can this be identified
  • Appropriate action to be planned in case of an overdose
  • Action if midazolam is ineffective

Health & Safety issues

  • Risk assessment
  • The individual care plan
  • Secure storage and safe disposal
  • Duty of care issues
  • Legal responsibilities of teachers, carers etc
  • Awareness of local policies on the administration of buccal midazolam
Rescue medication training covers the safe administration of buccal/nasal Midazolam up to JEC guidelines/standards – it does not cover general medication awareness or training.
Candidates will be awarded a certificate of attendance only and will not be assessed for competence to administer rescue medication.
We also recommend that candidates have attended basic save a life training.

Poole  – Adult and Paediatric Buccal midazolam training dates for 2018

All courses run from 13.15 – 15.00 and will be held at St Mary's Longfleet Church Centre (which is situated approximately 100 yards on the opposite side of the road from Poole Hospital) http://smlpoole.org.uk/Groups/255520/Church_Centre.aspx Please allow ample time for parking and aim to arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session.  There is limited parking on site. Alternative limited parking can be found in the hospital multi-storey opposite. Late arrivals may not be admitted.

Dorchester – Adult Buccal midazolam training dates for 2018

All courses run from 13.15 – 15.00 and will be held in The Dorford Centre, (next to the top of town roundabout) Bridport Road, Dorchester.

Please allow ample time for parking and aim to arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session. There is no parking on site but a pay and display car park is opposite although this can get very busy. Late arrivals may not be admitted.

Please note that all these session are on the same dates as Epilepsy Awareness so you could attend both sessions.
